Day Without Childcare Workers Shut Down Scores of Childcare Centers
Today, across the nation, childcare workers went on strike at scores of childcare centers to protest low wages and difficult working conditions.
“People don’t view us as, like, real teachers. So, we’re here fighting for our profession for our right to a livable wage for people to treat us like the professionals that we are, and just to bring awareness to the fact that if we didn’t have childcare for a day, our economy would come to a grinding halt,” striking Montana childcare worker Barbara Otey told KPAX.
2,000 Cedars-Sinai Workers Go on Strike in California
At Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in LA, over 2,000 workers are on strike over low pay and unsafe conditions.
The medical center received a D rating from the independent medical watchdog Leapfrog Group. This is a downgrade from their previous C rating. Additionally, OSHA recently issued 7 citations against the employer.
Workers say that low pay leads to high turnover, making conditions unsafe for patients.
“We have employees who have been working here 15, 16 years who don’t even make $20 an hour,” striking worker Ed Gladney told KNBC. “If my son can make more than me working at Target, something is wrong with that working here at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. And we’re willing to strike, to stand out here, to lose money for five days, in order to stand up and fight for what we believe in.”
Taco Daddy Employees Walkout in Downtown Frederick, Maryland
After receiving paychecks with missing pay on Saturday afternoon, employees at Taco Daddy in Frederick, Maryland walked out of the restaurant over allegations of wage theft.
“We all just kind of looked at each other and were like, ‘We’re doing this?’” bar manager Joseph Mackey told the Frederick News-Post. “Everyone agreed. Twelve people that day walked out of that building and locked the door.”
