In the 9 years since Payday was founded, we’ve been nominated for an Emmy, traveled with Lula from Sao Bernardo dos Campos to the Oval Office, and now we are going to throw an epic party at a Twin Peaks./-themed bar with Tony Buba.
Described by The New York Times as “The Bard of Braddock”, Tony Buba’s films about the Mon Valley inspired me as a kid growing up nearby. This fundraiser is gonna be in the same spirit of that scrappy independent media.
A lot of folks have already asked me “Melk, is there gonna be an open bar at this party?” Fuck no, I’ll be lucky if I can afford my own drinks. (So bring some money for drinks, food, and to donate or I may have to auction off my vintage Buccos jacket to pay my bar bill). But there is gonna be amazing food!
Hemlock House is a really cool Twin Peaks/David Lynch themed bar run by some awesome folks in the neighborhood where I grew up in Regent Square, Pittsburgh. They have an amazing fish menu on Fridays and a cool fusion that has become legendary. (Regulars still brag about how AOC and Summer Lee once had dinner there).
Hemlock House is a pretty inclusive space that welcomes LGBTQ folks, people of color, those with disabilities, weird David Lynch fans, and even dissidents in the labor movement. (The cook, Mike, is the son of a militant Postal Workers union leader from Maine, whose views on the labor movement are as mind blowing as his food).
So come one, come all to Hemlock House at 1126 South Braddock Ave on Friday April 18th. It’s gonna start around 5 and go till 8ish, maybe later.
If you can’t make it - donations can be made on Venmo @PaydayReport or on our website at www.paydayreport.com/donate.
See yinz next Friday the 18th at Hemlock House starting around 5 till whenever folks decide to go home and watch Twin Peaks.
