This year is Payday’s 9th year in business and the future is looking uncertain.
We have been nominated for an Emmy, covered Lula all the way from Sáo Bernardo dos Campos to the Oval Office, published more than 1,300 articles, and were credited by the Washington Post as being the first publication to systematically track the post-pandemic strike wave.
For many years, we continued to grow at a sustainable rate. Then, Elon Musk destroyed Twitter for left groups like Payday. Our crowdfunding has taken a tremendous hit and declined by more than 30%. (Although, in recent months, we have been having some success on Bluesky)
However, the financial stress of just barely scraping by is weighing on my health and certainly my hairline. I’m considering looking for a job and switching away from Payday, but I don't want to do it. I want to fight because I’ve spent 17 years as a labor reporter and I don’t want to give up now.
I am optimistic that we can get our annual grant renewed this summer, but in order to do it, we need to show that we can grow the publication.
