June 6th Washington-Baltimore NewsGuild To Host Payday #OrganizeTheSouth Fundraiser

On Tuesday, June 6th, The Washington-Baltimore News Guild is proud to support and announce an Organizing Event and Happy Hour Fundraiser for our member & friend in the struggle for Labor Rights, Payday Senior Labor Reporter, Mike Elk who will be a host a discussion of our struggle to #OrganizeTheSouth.

Over the past several years, Elk has been on the ground reporting from Mississippi on the efforts of Nissan Workers, from Charleston, SC on the brave union drive to organize workers at Boeing, and has lived in Chattanooga, TN while covering unionization efforts at Volkswagen.

Elk has driven over 7,000 miles throughout the South and has diligently covered and shed a light on things the mainstream has overlooked.

WBNG Organizing Director Bruce Jett will also talk about WBNG’s recent string of successes among digital media union shops.
 
This event is open to any and all.

Mike Elk is an Emmy-nominated labor reporter and alumni of the Guardian. In addition to filing nearly 2,000 stories from 46 states, Elk traveled with Lula from Sáo Bernando do Campos all the way to the Oval Office in the White House. Credited by the Washington Post for being the first reporter to track the strike wave systematically, Elk started Payday Report using his NLRB settlement from being illegally fired for union organizing in 2015. He lives in his hometown of Pittsburgh and works frequently in Rio de Janeiro, where he attended college at PUC-Rio. He speaks both Portuguese and Pittsburghese fluently.
