Next Tuesday, I am speaking at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum’s 36th annual conference on “Baseball & American Culture.”
I will be speaking about how Black and white baseball players used World War Two to push for integration of the game. (We have a huge 4,000 word story two years in the making coming out on Memorial Day)
However, the trip will be quite expensive. I have to pay for airfare to Syracuse, four nights’ hotel stay in Cooperstown (an expensive tourist town), Amtrak/bus ticket to Cooperstown from Syracuse, and food. It’s a baseball conference. If I have enough money left over, I’m hoping to rent a bike to get around.
In addition to labor reporting, I have done some baseball writing over the years and it’s an incredible honor to be invited to speak at the Hall of Fame.
My baseball writing has primarily focused on minor league unionization, Latinos' relationship with baseball in the age of Trump, and how Roberto Clemente's radical politics are whitewashed in remembering him. I also helped with writing The New York Times bestseller The Last Manager by John Miller, a biography of legendary Baltimore Orioles Manager Earl Weaver, and am credited in the acknowledgements.
However, I am worried about being able to afford the trip and other travel expenses. It’s also my birthday week and I'm hoping after I present my paper to just take a few days off to relax. (My first semi-vacation in nearly a year)
