Folks,
This week is Thanksgiving, but there are no paid holidays for owners of crowdfunded publications like mine. Indeed, I often lose money when I take time off for vacations because I'm not writing stories and crowdfunding money online.
This year, we need your help to take some time off and refresh for the fight ahead.
Donate to help me take a few days off for Thanksgiving.
During the last election, I worked my ass off, filing 52 stories and 26 videos on the election. While we may have lost that election, I'm proud of our work, particularly calling out Kamala for being MIA during the Boeing strike.
Now, we are in the much stricter fight against fascism, and it's going to require us to take some time to rest up before the holidays.
We are going to have to ask tough questions about how unions plan to defend their members against deportations. We will also have to ask questions about whether some private sector unions will fall for divide-and-conquer tactics as Trump and Elon Musk begin a massive attack on the federal workers' union.
During the first Trump Administration, Payday pioneered "strike tracking." We tracked over 3,000 strikes nationwide and were the first outlet to show that the corporate media was missing a major strike wave.
Slowly, other outlets picked up on our work. Esquire called us "invaluable," the New York Times described our publication as giving the labor beat "new energy." Other outlets picked up our work, and slowly, the narrative changed.
Changing the narrative was crucial to inspiring workers to unionize. Workers gained a sense that they were part of a broader movement and felt more confident in taking action.
Now, we see unions with a 70% approval rating, according to Gallup, and those ratings will not change overnight. Many unions will fight back against the Trump Administration, but some might be scared.
The key to motivating the labor movement now is showing the organizing going on around the country. Therefore, Payday is beginning to do surge mapping to focus on overlooked organizing areas in key regions and sectors of the country.
We will have a lot of work to do in the year ahead, but first, we need to relax and enjoy the holidays.
Donate to help sometime off and get back in the fight this coming fall.
