Folks,
Greetings from the Burgh, where we are beginning to see what may be a small uptick in union organizing this summer.

17,000 AT&T Workers Strike in South
This weekend, over 17,000 AT&T workers went out on strike throughout the South.
“Our union entered into negotiations in a good faith effort to reach a fair contract, but we have been met at the table by company representatives who were unable to explain their own bargaining proposals and did not seem to have the actual bargaining authority required by the legal obligation to bargain in good faith,” CWA District 3 Vice President Richard Honeycutt told NPR.
1,000 Cornell Workers Went on Strike
At Cornell, over 1,000 workers, representing blue collar and clerical employees at the university, have gone on strike. The strike occurred only one week before move-in week.
“We’re leveraging the academic calendar to show Cornell that you need to pay us what we’re worth,” UAW Local 2300 President Christine Johnson told the Cornel Sun. “We want the students to have a good experience.”

Teamsters President Denied DNC Speaking Slot
Earlier this summer, Teamsters President Sean O’Brien drew controversy when he spoke at the Republican National Convention. (Listen to our episode with “This American Life” on the incident).
Now, it is being reported that O’Brien was denied a request to speak at the DNC. Kamala Harris, though, has pledged to meet privately with the Teamsters.
DNC to Heavily Feature Union Leaders Tonite
Finally, while O’Brein wont be speaking at the DNC tonite, the convention’s first night is expected to heavily feature union leaders. At least 7 union leaders were expected to speak on Monday night.
“Chicago is the hometown of the American Labor Movement, and this DNC is union strong,” Chicago Federation of Labor President Bob Reiter told CBS. “From the labor peace agreement we negotiated with the DNC and the Host Committee to our incredible workforce that keeps Chicago moving every day, we are excited to welcome delegates from across the United States to the Windy City.”
