PITTSBURGH, PA - In our latest mini-docu, an undocumented Brazilian immigrant who arrived in Pittsburgh less than a year ago recounts her 9-day journey across Mexico and the Rio Grande.
She is part of a growing population of undocumented Brazilian immigrants in Pittsburgh. In 2000, there were 200-300 Brazilians in Pittsburgh. Now, according to the 2020 census, there are over 8,000, and the population is growing rapidly.
Many of the immigrants arriving are from Rondônia, a deplorable, violent state in the Amazon next to Brazil’s border with Bolivia. Many of these immigrants can obtain asylum as a result of the violence.
Carla hopes to obtain asylum in the United States and is currently undergoing a complex legal process to do so.
However, she says that if she were a citizen, she would vote for Donald Trump. She says that not all immigrants can be allowed into the United States.
