At the end of the month, Payday Senior Labor Reporter Mike Elk is $1,000 behind where he would have been without getting sick. He’s flat broke, $200 short on the rent, and still recovering from a serious illness.
This week’s Payday goes out to our 150 reporters at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, members of the Pittsburgh NewsGuild, who are currently engaged in a byline strike. The union has also filed unfair labor practices charges with the National Labor Relations Board claiming that the Post-Gazette’s owner, Toledo-based Block Communications, has unilaterally imposed health care costs on the union outside of the scope of collective bargaining.

“Not only is Rick Saccone the first Republican to ever refuse to fill out the AFL-CIO’s endorsement questionnaire in the 18th Congressional District, but now he is refusing to allow labor reporters into his events because I think he’s scared of getting questions about his anti-union and anti-immigrant record,” Elk added.
“In Western Pennsylvania, it’s no surprise that we put a statue to one of our great labor leaders right there in the churchyard for everyone to see forever,” said Lamb. “It helps us remember who to say thank you to, and it helps remember that service is the rent we pay for living.”
