Across Pittsburgh, we have seen a major increase in ICE activity in the past week. Multiple ICE detentions happened in Wilkinsburg, a neighborhood that borders where I grew up.

According to  Monica Ruiz of Casa San Jose, immigrant rights defense groups were getting 10-15 calls a week about ICE activity, but are now getting 10-15 calls a day.

Activists in Pittsburgh are fighting back and trying to protect immigrants by tracking ICE, setting up alerts, and providing mutual aid as well legal support to those affected by raids.

At a time when many in Pittsburgh are wondering what to do, it's more important than ever that Payday provides examples of how people can fight back against ICE and get involved.

While I’m in Brasil doing grant work on the assassination of Rio Councilwoman Marielle Franco for the next week, Payday has contracted with Amos Wolf to cover the uptick of ICE activity in Pittsburgh. Now, we need your help to pay him $32-an-hour for his work.

We need your help to pay Amos this week at a fair, equitable rate so that we can continue to cover the raids happening while still covering international solidarity here in Brasil.

So far, we have done some good work including  being one of the first publications in Pittsburgh to send a warning of increasing ICE raids. We wrote about how the internationally leading AI Tech hub Carnegie Mellon University, which is 37% international students, is seeing unprecedented levels of activism.

Finally, we wrote last night about how Congresswoman Summer Lee and others in Pittsburgh are now discussing the push for a general strike.

We have so much more that we want to do, but we need to be able to pay Amos to do this work. While some publications rip off their freelancers, we believe in paying them $32-an-hour. So please, pass the hat and help us cover the fightback against ICE’s increased activity in Pittsburgh
