BREAKING: Smart Union Member Abrego Garcia released from ICE detention

Just this afternoon, ICE released Abrego Garcia, a member of the SMART union, from ICE detention in Maryland: Garcia's detention generated controversy and an unprecedented coalition of construction unions demanding his release.

In March, Garcia had been deported by ICE to a notoriously violent prison in El Salvador; despite having legal authorization to be in the United States.

The Supreme Court ordered that Garcia be returned to the United States, but for nearly 5 months, the Trump Administration resisted returning.

His union, SMART, was vocal in demanding his release and mobilizing construction unions in an unprecedented fashion to have Garcia returned. His union celebrated the decision.

"As we said from the beginning, this isn’t about one man — it is about ensuring our constitutional rights are protected, for the sake of all SMART members and everyone in this country. We will always fight for due process for every single member of our union," said SMART Union President Michael Coleman in a statement.
