Bolsonaro Charged with Planning to Poison Lula
In Brazil today, former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been charged with plotting to kill Lula and his top aides following his defeat in 2022.
The charges were made by Brazil’s Attorney General, Paulo Gonet Branco. They follow a similar indictment given last November, which Payday covered at length in November.
New revelations include that Bolsonaro personally approved a plan to poison Lula.
“The members of the criminal organization structured at the presidential palace a plan to attack institutions, aiming to bring down the system of the powers and the democratic order, which received the sinister name of ‘Green and Yellow Dagger,’" Gonet said in the report. “The plan was conceived and taken to the knowledge of the president, and he agreed to it.”
Now, the charges will go before the Brazilian Supreme Court, which will decide whether to have Bolsonaro arrested and face trial. Given past arrests ordered by the Brazilian Supreme Court of Bolsonaro officials, many legal observers in Brazil are expecting Bolsonaro to be arrested.
Brazil Largest Democracy Still Standing in the Americas
Brazil is the largest democracy still standing in the Americas and they are going after the coup plotters there. It is important for us in North America to pay attention to this crucial fight.
Payday has been one of the few publications that has consistently covered Brazilian activists and even partnered with the leading Brazilian magazine Revista Forum and Fernando Calvacanti to cover the 2024 elections in the United States.
We were on the ground in 2022 when Lula was elected and covered him all the way to his state visit to the Oval Office in 2023. We were also on the ground in 2024 when the assassins of Rio City Councilwoman Marielle Franco were arrested and captured.
Payday will have more updates tomorrow on the arrests and continue to cover this story.

10,000 Colorado King Soopers Workers Celebrate Win
Over 10,000 grocery workers at King Soopers have suspended their strikes as part of a 100-day peace deal with their employers. The union and the company will continue to negotiate, but already the company has agreed to increase staffing locations and benefits for workers.
“Our strike was just the beginning of this effort and elevated staffing in grocery stores to a national level with more workers and allies joining together,” UFCW Local 7 President Kim Candova said in a statement. “Just like our successful campaign to stop the mega grocery merger, we won’t stop until we win Better Staffing and Better Stores for grocery store workers and customers."
Alright folks, I gotta go run out to Swissvale to see someone, but we will have more tomorrow.
