Folks,
Greetings from the Burgh, where we have been filming and talking to all kinds of workers. We will have a ton of videos coming out in the next few days. The big news is out of Washington State tonight.
64% of Boeing Workers Vote Down First Contract
The Machinist announced tonight that 64% of its 33,000 Boeing members voted down the most recent tentative agreement. The strike will now enter its second month as workers push for more.
“After 10 years of sacrifices, we still have ground to make up, and we’re hopeful to do so by resuming negotiations promptly,” said IAM Local 571 President Jon Holden. “This is workplace democracy – and also clear evidence that there are consequences when a company mistreats its workers year after year.”
Workers voted to reject a 40% raise over 4 years.
While Boeing workers make an average of $75,000 a year and receive 8% raises a year, the cost of living has risen by 40% over the last decade in the area.
“The offer wasn’t good enough for the people who have to support a family here,” Boeing worker Melanie Marciniak told the Seattle Times.
Payday will have more in the morning, but check out the Seattle Times for now.
