This weekend, the Minneapolis AFL-CIO and several large Minnesota labor councils endorsed a measure calling for a general strike in response to ICE’s continued operations and raids in Minneapolis on Friday, January 23.
Payday Report needs to raise $1,600 to cover my salary for working for a week on the Minneapolis General Strike, as well as the part-time costs of editors and researchers, who will help us track it and get the word out. (We pay them $32-an-hour - more than I make at Payday working full time lol)
$1,600 isn’t a ton of money, but for a broke labor reporter, it will allow me to focus on just doing this work this week and providing coverage that could inspire more organizing.
Payday has extensive experience tracking strike waves. During the pandemic, the Washington Post credited Payday Report for being the first publication to systematically track the pandemic-era strike wave.
Now, a general strike endorsed by the Minneapolis AFL-CIO could intensify the fight and inspire unions in other cities to go on strike against ICE”s continued operations. Already, several other regional labor federations have endorsed the strike, and other unions nationwide could be further inspired to take action.
Already, solidarity actions have been held on Friday in cities across the United States, suggesting this could grow into a mass movement. This movement could grow, but it’s gonna need coverage if it’s gonna grow.
However, the mainstream media is largely ignoring the General Strike. So, it’s up to us to cover that movement.
The Minneapolis General Strike could be a turning point in the movement against ICE and inspire similar strikes in other cities.
Chelsie Glaubitz Gabiou, President of the Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation, AFL-CIO, said that the strike is necessary to get business leaders to break their silence about immigration.
“Parents are being forced to stay home, students held out of school, fearing for their lives, all while the employer class remains silent,“ said Gabiou. “Our labor federations are encouraging everyone to participate on January 23rd. It’s time for every single Minnesotan who loves this state and the notion of truth and freedom to raise their voices and deepen their solidarity for our neighbors and coworkers living under this federal occupation.”
On Tuesday at 8 PM, Payday will have a special subscribers’ Q & A with CWA Local 7250 President Kieran Knutson, who will discuss how they hope the strike movement spreads. Email me at melk@paydayreport.com if you would like to attend.
We need your help to cover this crucial strike. $1,600 allows me to focus on this story all week and hire some part-time researchers and editors to help me track it.
